Speech & Language Assessment

The presence of a speech or language disorder is determined through data from the following sources:

  • Case history interview (including relevant health/education reports)
  • Clinical observation and parental report
  • Standardized testing

The need for treatment is carefully determined. Parents/primary caregivers and involved members of the child’s educational and/or health care team are included in the process.

Language Therapy

Language is the early foundation for later learning success. Successful communication and social interaction is built with a common language shared between two or more people. Goals for language therapy generally include:

  • preventing the severity of language delays or disorders
  • strengthening spoken language and language comprehension skills to match expected developmental milestone targets
  • reducing the frequency and frustration of communication breakdowns

Articulation Therapy

Speech therapy for sound articulation goals follow a hierarchy of steps. Treatment starts with correct production at the sound level working towards spontaneous conversation. Drill play is used to provide motivation and to sustain attention during therapy. An effective home program is developed with short daily exercises in between therapy sessions.

Stuttering Therapy

The Lidcombe Program for early childhood stuttering is used to treat stuttering disorders in preschool and early elementary school age children. The Lidcombe Program is a daily behavioural therapy program that is delivered by the parent or caregiver. The speech-language pathologist trains the parent and monitors the program weekly for progress and changes as needed. Parent feedback is overwhelmingly positive and children love it.

Reading Therapy

Reading intervention in the early years will focus on strengthening the phonological system and phonological awareness skills. The program for school-age children will also include building sight word vocabulary, increasing reading rate and accuracy, and improving reading comprehension.
